From Tragedy, a legend of hope was born as Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation was founded in 1997 from the original endowment fund started by Charles B. Clark. At the turn of the last century, the twin cities of Neenah-Menasha and the surrounding communities had no hospital. When Theda Clark Peters, daughter of philanthropist and Kimberly-Clark co-founder, CB Clark, died in 1903 from complications during childbirth, Theda’s family used a $96,000 community gift from her will to build a hospital. Theda’s brother Charles B. Clark Jr. pledged another $50,000 to establish an endowment which still exists today. The foundation’s total asset base has increased by 64 percent in four years, placing the foundation among some of the most exceptional philanthropic foundations in the nation.
The Foundation’s Capital Campaign 2000-2001, “Protecting the Golden Hour,” was dedicated to improving and expanding the trauma care resources for the people of the Fox Cities and all of northeastern Wisconsin. To raise additional funds, the Foundation went directly to the community for financial support and the community’s response was tremendous. With their help, the campaign provided:
- A new ThedaStar helicopter
- Trauma center improvements
- A new breast center
The Foundation has also been able to fund other projects, such as a new higher definition microscope bringing state of the art technology to the inpatient surgery center. New bilateral breast imaging software was also funded by the Foundation.
Today, the Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation is an organization of community representatives that was established to create and support treatment and sustain funding initiatives for the Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wis. The Foundation enables members of the community to improve health status by directly supporting the mission and vision of the Theda Clark Medical Center.
